The Limestone Coast

The place of choice to invest, live and grow.
  • The Limestone Coast region is an area of over 21,000 square kilometres in the south eastern corner of South Australia, lying midway between the capital cities of Adelaide and Melbourne. With a population of approximately 67,000 (ABS Estimated Resident Population 2019), the region houses many of South Australia’s key agricultural resource-based companies.
  • The Limestone Coast is made up of seven local government areas:
  • The area is largely characterised by fertile soils, reliable rainfall and significant groundwater resources, with excellent grazing for livestock and productive conditions for cropping, viticulture, forestry, dairy production and fishing.
  • The economy capitalises on the regions significant groundwater resources and was originally built from traditional agriculture-based activities of sheep and cattle grazing. This has expanded over time to also encompass forestry, manufacturing, tourism, viticulture, dairy production, cropping, engineering, transport, retail, health, education and associated service industries.
  • Economic growth across the Limestone Coast is highly variable and demographic changes are putting pressures on the working age population. Long term economic prosperity will be based on the enduring competitiveness of our agricultural foundations, alongside creative approaches to ensuring that Limestone Coast residents are well placed to pick up the best of the anticipated growth in service and tourism industries.
