H5 Bird Flu Tourism Operator Toolkit
Information and practical guidance for Limestone Coast tourism operators
H5 bird flu has been detected in South Australia, including in wild birds across the Limestone Coast. The situation continues to be monitored by the South Australian Government, with PIRSA leading the State's biosecurity response.
The Limestone Coast remains open and welcoming to visitors, and tourism operators can continue to provide experiences across the region while following current government advice.
To support local tourism businesses, the Limestone Coast H5 Bird Flu Tourism Operator Toolkit has been developed to provide practical, region-specific information for operators.
What does the toolkit cover?
The toolkit provides guidance to help tourism businesses:
- understand H5 bird flu and what it means for tourism;
- recognise signs of illness in birds and other wildlife;
- know what to do if sick or dead wildlife is encountered;
- understand the Avoid. Record. Report. approach;
- prepare staff to respond confidently to visitor questions;
- develop appropriate visitor messaging;
- review business operations and contingency plans;
- prepare for potential changes to coastal, wildlife or nature-based experiences;
- and access current government information and support resources.
The toolkit has been specifically adapted for the Limestone Coast, with a focus on the region's beaches, coastal reserves, national parks, wildlife areas and nature-based tourism experiences.
Stay informed
The situation can change as surveillance and testing continues. Operators should always refer to the latest information from the South Australian Government and PIRSA before providing current advice to visitors.
For the latest official information, visit birdflu.sa.gov.au.

The toolkit is intended to support tourism businesses in preparing for and responding to the current situation. It does not replace directions, restrictions or advice issued by PIRSA, SA Health, the Department for Environment and Water, Parks or other authorised government agencies.
