Growing Leaders in the Upper Limestone Coast

The first residential workshop for the Emerging Leaders Program, took place this week in the Upper Limestone Coast. Bringing together a diverse group of ambitious leaders from across the region, the two-day workshop exceeded expectations, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience of discovery, growth, and connection. One participant shared:

“I didn’t really know what to expect but had reasonable expectations of the content. These were all exceeded, and I have found the first workshop to be of great benefit to me personally and professionally.”

A Connection to Our Region

At the heart of the program is a deepening connection to the Limestone Coast. Participants engaged in discussions about what leadership looks like in our region and how it can shape the future of our communities. They explored local projects that showcase the resilience and strength of our communities, such as the remarkable restoration of the Motorsport Park in Bordertown. For some, it was their first visit to the Upper Limestone Coast, and they were inspired by the stories of local people coming together to rebuild a world-class facility. It was a powerful example of how community-driven leadership can mobilise change and create lasting impact. The workshop also featured conversations with the Landscape Board and Burrandies Aboriginal Corporation, who shared how their partnership supports the connection of knowledge and community across the region. A particularly poignant moment was the discussion on the importance of walking alongside our First Nations communities—recognising their deep knowledge of the land and fostering partnerships that reflect this wisdom.

Personal Growth and Resilience

The workshop wasn’t just about connecting to the region—it is equally about personal growth. Each participant took time to reflect on their own leadership aspirations and uncover deeper insights into who they are as leaders. Through a variety of activities and discussions, participants explored the importance of self-awareness, resilience, and leading with their strengths. The focus on resilience proved particularly impactful. Leading is often challenging, and the workshop provided participants with a toolkit of strategies for managing stress, overcoming setbacks, and navigating adversity. By the end of the workshop, many participants felt more confident, more self-assured, and eager to lead with purpose.

Building Lifelong Connections

One of the most powerful aspects of the Emerging Leaders Program is the network it creates. Throughout the workshop, participants built strong connections with peers from diverse industries and backgrounds across the Limestone Coast. These relationships are invaluable—not just for the duration of the program but for years to come. Program alumni often cite the ongoing network as one of the most significant benefits, and this cohort is already laying the groundwork for lasting peer support and mentorship.

This is just the beginning of an exciting leadership journey. In February, the cohort will reunite in Robe for the next residential workshop, where the focus will shift to leading change. The experience promises to build on the leadership, resilience, and community foundations established in this first workshop, setting the stage for another transformative learning opportunity.

RDALC would like to thank local businesses of the Upper Limestone Coast for their generous support. A special thanks to Farmers Leap Winery, The Woolshed Inn, and Bordertown Caravan Park for their sponsorship and hospitality during the two-day workshop.
